Newtopia ManifestoCreated at ENSAD Nancy, France in 2018-2019


This project was created for the development of a personal manifesto about design that will shape future projects. Without an ideal, how can one work towards a positive goal?Most visions available of possible futures are techno centric and devoid of passion and fun. Worlds where technologies are the saviours of man’s mistakes but nowhere is there a change in behaviour. 
In a way it seems like people want to transform our society not to be better, but to create solutions so that we continue being how we are without ~dying~.

In this project, I am trying to understand what is good design and what design deserves to be part of our future. In our current day and age, environmental issues are key and that is why as a creator, I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint as much as possible. After taking a simple test online, it was evident I consumed far more than my share of available resources on our planet which led to the question:
What are we allowed as 1/8 000 000 000 of the Earth?

It is important to take the time to slow down.
It is important to take the time to read, talk, think, eat, sleep. 
It is important to love.
It is important to be honest.
It is important to remember that important things are not rules. Simply important elements.
It is important to take the time to know what is happening in the world. (“Good design expresses the Zeitgeist”)
It is important to take the time to know what has happened in the world. (History is key, without history all is simply styling/embrace of the new)
It is important to remember where we are and what surrounds us.
It is important to care.
It is important to act.


Opinions are free.
Everything is simple, nothing is too serious.
I must use a fair share of ressources. To be allowed ressources, I should participate in their creation might that be their growth or the funding and support of people who make them.
Objects that I own at the moment are accepted, all objects to be acquired from here on out, must be thought out and analyzed.
I am important. I must remember that other people are important as well.
I must take into consideration what the effect of my action might be.
I must strive to spread joy.
I am a designer, I must design my surroundings. 

Take yourself seriously. 

Don’t take yourself seriously.

Once the manifesto was created a performance was prepared and 30 students from the school were invited to this secret gathering to talk about our shared future.
From that point on, they were presented with the idea of our responsability as creators and ten people were asked to volunteer to be the first to pass a test. Aiming to be a hippocratic oath of design in&#38;nbsp; a way, it asked if these 10 volunteers were ready to pay extra attention to their impact on the world.

Obelisk
Montreal 2019-2021 (Ongoing)Oak wood with a waxed Shou sugi ban finish, 3D printed transparent PLA, Led strips

Obelisk is a lamp project that hopes to apply some of the teachings of Ettore Sottsass and Achile Castiglioni. Most notably, Sottsass’s views on wonder and design. 
“We simply (need) to open our eyes and wander through phenomena like children. I believe that if we could put an approach like this into practice, with true patience, instead of always trying to understand, possess and control, we might even manage to have a different kind of industry.” (2003)
In an attemp to break regularity and offer more playful options, Obelisk hopes to change our interactions with light and its effects on our surroundings through a very tactile approach.

What is a home?

 Why is it so important?

 How is it important to different people? 

How are our individual values expressed through these objects?

 How do soft surfaces and materials play a role in our sense of home? What is the societal perception of home versus an individual’s?
The exploration of these questions became the basis for us to create products that reflected our personal perspectives of what defines a home that will both embody our own values, but also challenge aspects of societal pressures on what should be valued. These objects were a mixture of furniture and textiles and would express our research through form, function, colour and materiality with an emphasis on soft surfaces.

The sofa was designed in a way that no glue or screws are needed in the assembly of the individual pieces, rather pieces are held together using the friction and weight from the dry joinery interlocking with each other. This keeps the instructions needed to a minimal amount and makes assembly simple and intuitive.Transportability was a dominant factor in the design of the sofa. With private forms of transportation becoming increasingly unaffordable and unsustainable, we wanted a piece of furniture that could be transported by public means. This is why we made the sofa design modular with each individual piece made to be light enough to be transported individually. Heavier pieces such as the back and seat boards have handholds.

By making the sofa modular, it allows for a user to adapt it to it's needs. Taking our own lives as example, when we choose to change apartments we might find ourselves with more or less space. This sofa can change the potential issue by adapting to it's surroundings. It also opens up to the possibility of expansion beyond the 2 or 3 place model. &#38;nbsp;

Through field research and analysis of other coffee tables, the guidelines were drawn for what was desired. I wanted the interactions of people around this object to be translated to this table but I wanted users to be incapable of feeling any harsh edges. From friction to comfort, from hidden to shown, this table is a table of proud patina.From the choice of the materials to the finishing details and underside curves, this piece of furniture is made to be comfortably seated around and to be leaned on. A central point in future exchanges, discussions and discoveries.

	The concept behind the creation of these vases was based on an inquiry in DNA and human reproduction. Fascinated by the idea of a repeating sequence of finite elements giving endlessly different results, I decided I wanted to try and use the idea in a project. At the same time as these thoughts were bouncing around my mind, I entered a class conversation about the act of giving birth and having a child. A concept that bewilders me still to this day, I found it interesting how each individual is at some point a soft sponge willing to accept all knowledge.
These vases are, in a way, children of the people who go through the process of setting up the molds, pouring the slip inside and then watching over the drying ceramic. Once the process is complete, the “creators” can slowly remove the plaster parts to reveal their child. A vessel for them to shape and fill with knowledge.
